The more of this humiliation he attains, the more willing will he be to come as a sinner to the Savior; but he cannot attain an increase of it, before he trusts in Him for it as a part of his salvation. “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation (Romans 10:5-10). Paul was abused, reviled, and persecuted by his countrymen, yet he not only forgave them, but constantly prayed for their conversion. Romans 10:10. Here we should especially remark, that while the salvation of his countrymen was the desire of Paul’s heart, and while he was endeavoring in every way possible to call their attention to the Gospel, he did not neglect to offer up prayer for them to God. He filled in the detail, “Christ,” which the law only anticipated. Other means, as we have opportunity, should not be left untried; but prayer is at all times in our power, and in this we should ever persevere.

Were you compromising, or was it really not a good time to speak up? 20. The Law, which was never given as a means of attaining righteousness, was used by the Jews for this very purpose. Show it to your congregation. First, the reality, the thing signified, faith; afterwards, the outward and visible sign in the confession of that faith. Here, then, is the stretching forth of the hands of God to that people all the day long, that is, during the whole period of their dispensation; and here the complaint is verified of their continuing, notwithstanding, disobedient and gainsaying. The love, therefore, of God for Himself and for all that is good; His holiness, which places Him in infinite opposition to sin; His regard for the honor of His law; and His justice, which requires the giving to all what is due, — demand that sin should be punished. No one has to search out this truth. Some of us will send out missionaries, supporting them financially and in prayer. This was their slogan. Verses 1-4 The Jews built on a false foundation, and refused to come to Christ for free salvation by faith, and numbers in every age do the same in various ways.
To live by the law requires, as Moses had declared, that the law be perfectly obeyed. In the first text, Moses indicates the source of Israel’s failure to trust and to obey God: the problem is one of the heart (see also Deuteronomy 5:28-29 cited above). For the Scripture saith . Scripture: Romans 10:13–21. This righteousness is in Christ, and He is not at a distance, so that we must scale the heavens, or descend below the earth, — in one word, attempt what is impracticable, to come to Him, and derive from Him this benefit. Can there then be any illustration of the receiving of righteousness by faith, which is here the Apostle’s subject, and the precepts that were given to the Israelites as a shadow of the Gospel? What do these two statements mean? He and this righteousness are brought near unto us, as was long before predicted.

They could not escape from it, but they did not believe it. For one thing, Paul is ruminating on why it can be that so many of his fellow Jews have, in his words, “not submitted to God’s righteousness” (10:3). For he who has brought in the end also created the beginning.” The Son of God gave us the Mosaic law, through His Holy Spirit, so to search for Jesus in the law is to fulfill the purpose for which He gave it. Well may his heart rejoice, even when his soul is heavy, because he has such work to do in his Master’s name. And though the New Testament often contrasts the demands of the law with the voice of mercy speaking in the Gospel, yet here the Gospel also speaks through the law. This suits his object, while he drops the literal, although also a just and acknowledged sense.

Belief in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead was the second requirement of the gospel, as defined and declared by Paul and the apostles. Only one person was allowed to shoot at a time. Christ is the ultimatum of the law; and when we go to the law, accepted and protected by him, we present to the law all that it can possibly demand of us. Certainly they knew, and they knew also that the gospel was not to be confined to them. It may delude you. “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:28-29). But this should not make us complacent. ‘They have moved Me to jealousy;’ that is, as they had given their love and their heart to others besides God, in the same way God would give His love and His heart to others besides them. In Deuteronomy 30, the questions asked pertain to going up to heaven and going across the sea. The Apostles communicated their testimony by the living voice, and by their writings. The moral law, as has been observed, had been in force from the beginning, as is proved in this Epistle, ch. Was not this our own case? According to the energetic language of the Apostle, in the seventh chapter of this Epistle, they are ‘dead to the law.’ While dead to it, however, as a covenant, whether as to its blessing or its curse — justification by it or condemnation — it remains their rule of duty, and must for ever continue in force. And they are so beautiful because, you see, God has put them at the root of everything. They will go about, aye, even to the very gates of hell; they will try to climb up by prayers, even to the gates of heaven. The economy of Moses was not, however, to be permanent. Those who took it upon themselves to oppose and correct Jesus were the religious leaders and the biblical scholars of that day. He accordingly begins this chapter with an acknowledgment of their sincerity as actuated by a zeal of God; but before prosecuting the subject of God’s sovereignty further, he more particularly recurs to their unbelief, to which in the preceding chapter he had already alluded.
That which must be believed and confessed can be summed up in two simple statements: These two simple statements have such profound depth of meaning and implications they will take more than a lifetime to comprehend.

Israel’s disobedience and failure is temporary. It was never conceived in the New Testament that one would make a private decision to believe in Jesus and yet not take a public stand in baptism.1 The gospel as Paul proclaims it does not give men the option to believe without taking a public stand for Christ. The prophets did not call upon Israel to work harder at law-keeping, but to simply believe in God and in His provision for righteousness and salvation in the Messiah who was to come. — So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

In fact, Paul significantly modifies or restates the words of this passage. The Jews who had a zeal for God “tried harder” to be righteous but failed because they sought to earn righteousness by their law-keeping. Why has the gospel apparently made no impact upon them?

Romans 10:12-13. PAUL was fully aware that the doctrine of the sovereignty of God in the rejection of the Jews and the preaching of salvation to the Gentiles, would greatly offend his countrymen. Sproul writes in his commentary Romans that “not everyone in the church is called to be a missionary, but every member of the church is responsible to make sure that the missionary activity gets done.” The Great Commission is not for a … It is unnecessary to refute the opinion of those who hold that the Gospel cannot speak to men savingly in the Scriptures, and that it is never effectual without the living voice of a preacher. Israel wanted to establish her own righteousness. Many wish to study the Scriptures as an intellectual exercise.

It is the new teaching of the gospel. Those whom Paul refers to as not only unbelievers but as “ignorant” are the Jews, the most well-informed people on the face of the earth. (12-17) The Jews might know this from Old Testament prophecies. On this law of everlasting obligation, under which all mankind were placed, it may be proper to make a few general remarks, as well as on the covenant with Israel, to which there is also reference in this chapter. For what saith the Scripture? It is not what you shall do that shall save you; it is what Christ has done. If Law-keeping were God’s means of making men righteous, then why was it necessary for Christ to come to the earth and die in the sinner’s place? What we discover in these verses is not a scriptural “proof” meant to convince us. Our Lord Himself staked all of His claims on His resurrection from the grave and even His opponents knew it (Matthew 12:38-40; 27:62-66).

— But they have not all obeyed the Gospel: for Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? After each shot, the director would tell the shooter whether he had hit his target or by how much he had missed. ‘The context in Joel,’ says Calvin, ‘will fully satisfy us that his prediction applies to this passage of Paul.’ But why should we need anything to convince us of this, but the authority of the Apostle himself? One guilty thought or desire would condemn for ever. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. First, Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. 9:33, the same quotation as in the verse before us is expounded, of not being ashamed to own Christ before unbelievers, or of being put to shame before Him at His coming. Why?
